COMEDY CENTRAL CONFIRMED AS NEW
INTERNATIONAL HOME OF CULT GAME SHOW TAKESHI’S CASTLE
UK leads roll out in autumn 2017
Jonathan Ross to host UK episodes
LONDON, 3rd October 2017 – Comedy Central today announced that it is the new international home of Takeshi’s Castle, having acquired the rights to new episodes from the brand new Thai series. One of Britain’s best known faces and comedians, Jonathan Ross, has been confirmed to provide humorous commentary over the UK episodes.
The comedic game show, in HD for the first time, was shot on location in Thailand with all new contestants and has been acquired from distributor, Bellon Entertainment. It will debut on Comedy Central UK in autumn 2017 before airing across Comedy Central’s international network of more than 33 branded channels, excluding the US, Canada and Japan.
The format, which features 100 members of the public attempting to tackle a series of crazy obstacles with the ultimate aim of reaching and storming the castle, follows the format of the original TBS hit Takeshi’s Castle, which first aired in Japan in 1986, becoming a cult phenomenon on Challenge TV in the UK in 2002 and elsewhere around the globe.
“Takeshi’s Castle is the gold standard of physical game shows and we can’t wait to bring the delightful mayhem of this show back to the UK with this new series,” commented Louise Holmes, Vice President, General Manager, Comedy Central UK. “Jonathan’s comedic brilliance will add a fresh level of funny to this well-loved format for both original fans and hopefully, a whole new generation of ‘Keshi-heads’.”
“A format designed to do nothing more than to make people laugh on a channel dedicated to the same goal – a perfect fit!” commented Gregory Bellon, President, Bellon Entertainment.
Makito Sugiyama, Chief, TBS Global Business said “We are happy to have Comedy Central as the new home for “Takeshi’s Castle” and look forward to it entertaining audiences around the globe.”
Comedy Central UK is currently airing a third series of Stand Up Central (Avalon) with Chris Ramsey at the helm, which follows on from noughties gameshow, Your Face or Mine (Talkback) which aired in May. Meanwhile, the channel has announced two further series of Russell Howard & Mum: Road Trip (Avalon) for 2018 and recently acquired Joel and Nish vs the World from BBC Worldwide as well as six episodes of stand-up performances taped live at Soho Theatre. The channel has also just finished production on a reversion of the Comedy Central US hit, Roast Battle UK (Fulwell 73 and IDEASATRON) and most recently announced that it has greenlit an improvisational comedy pilot with the working title Say Whaaat? (NorthSouth Productions).
The Comedy Central/TBS/Bellon deal for Takeshi’s Castle was brokered by Brad Wood, Director of Acquisitions, Talent and Development, Comedy Central, Melissa Hames, Program & Format Sales, Bellon Entertainment, Megumi Tsukada, TBS Global Business, dentsu X (Thailand) and Heliconia.
